ADHD Assessments

At Psychiatry on Harley Street, we provide comprehensive ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)assessments for adults in a professional, supportive, and confidential setting. Our experienced clinicians carry out detailed evaluations tailored to each individual, helping to identify attention, concentration, impulsivity, and behavioural difficulties that may impact daily life, education, or work. Following assessment, we offer personalised treatment plans which may include medication management, ongoing monitoring, and practical support to help patients achieve improved focus, emotional wellbeing, and quality of life.

WHAT IS ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition meaning it relates to the way the brain develops and functions, rather than being caused by upbringing, diet, or a lack of effort or discipline. It is characterised by difficulties with attention, impulse control, and in some cases hyperactivity. It is also one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in adults, particularly in women, where it often presents quite differently to the stereotype.

ADHD is not simply about being easily distracted. It involves a fundamental difference in how the brain regulates attention, emotion, motivation, and executive function, the mental skills that allow us to plan, organise, start tasks, and follow through. This can create significant difficulties at work, in relationships, and with self-esteem, often leading to years of feeling that something is wrong without understanding why.

WHAT MIGHT YOU NOTICE?

ADHD symptoms fall broadly into inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive categories, though many people experience both. Inattentive symptoms include difficulty sustaining focus, frequent mind-wandering, being easily distracted, losing things, forgetting appointments, and struggling to complete tasks particularly routine or unstimulating ones.

Hyperactive and impulsive symptoms include restlessness, talking excessively, interrupting others, making impulsive decisions, and difficulty waiting. In adults, hyperactivity often presents as internal restlessness, a feeling of always being 'on the go' mentally rather than visible physical overactivity.

Common symptoms include:

Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks
Frequent mind-wandering and distractibility
Disorganisation and difficulty prioritising
Forgetfulness and losing things
Starting but not finishing tasks
Impulsive decisions and actions
Restlessness and fidgeting
Emotional dysregulation
Time-blindness and poor time management
Hyperfocus on preferred or stimulating tasks

WHICH TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILIBLE?

ADHD is very well managed with a combination of medication and practical support. A thorough assessment is the essential starting point. We conduct comprehensive ADHD evaluations using structured clinical interviews and established diagnostic frameworks, ensuring a careful, individualised approach.

Stimulant Medication:  Medications such as methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine are highly effective for ADHD in the majority of people, improving attention, impulse control, and executive function.

Non-Stimulant Options:  For those who cannot tolerate stimulants, alternatives such as atomoxetine or guanfacine can be effective and are tailored to your individual needs and medical history.

Coaching & Skills Support:  Practical strategies for organisation, time management, and task initiation can complement medication, working with the ADHD brain rather than against it.

Psychological Therapy:  CBT adapted for ADHD helps address the low self-esteem, anxiety, and unhelpful thought patterns that often develop alongside an undiagnosed or untreated condition.
