Dr Shumaila Asmat
Dr Shumaila Asmat is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and fully registered medical practitioner with extensive experience across all levels of psychiatric care.
Dr Asmat qualified as a doctor in 2007 and completed her postgraduate training in psychiatry through the St Mary's North West London Core Psychiatric Training Programme. She subsequently completed her higher specialist training in Forensic Psychiatry through the Kent, Surrey and Sussex training programme.
She has been a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) since 2020 and is approved by the Secretary of State under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 as having special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
Dr Asmat was selected as a Parliamentary Scholar for the Royal College of Psychiatrists' prestigious Parliamentary Scholar Scheme, a highly competitive programme recognising clinical and leadership excellence. As part of this scheme, she spent one day a week at the House of Lords, working alongside Peers with an interest in mental health to develop the leadership and policy skills necessary to influence mental health legislation and reform at a national level.
Dr Asmat has worked across all levels of secure care, including high, medium and low secure hospitals, specialist community forensic teams, and within prison settings. She acts as an expert witness, providing expert psychiatric evidence to the criminal courts.
She has special interest in Neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and autism spectrum conditions and substance misuse. Her approach is recovery based and patient centred.
